The English department had our LMS training on the 31st Jan 2011 in the Library
3 things that we have learnt
1) Creating lessons on the LMS which would allow students to learn at home or even refer to it again when the lesson has been gone through in class. The lessons could also be shared with fellow colleagues which would make sharing of resources easier. This is especially useful in emergency situation such as the H1N1 case a few years ago where students have to stay at home to prevent the infectious disease from spreading.
2) Podcasting
We were shown this video which tells us more about podcasting and how come it became so popular.
3) The use of forum on how we can create a forum for the students to voice their opinions. To target a certain group of students, we could set the permission to only that group of students. The only flaw about it is, the forum does not track the number of posts that each participant has entered so it will be manual tracking on our part.
2 things that we would like to try
1) Use of Forum
- where it is being used for idea generation and promotes thinking.
2) Podcasting
- to develop oratorical skills of students.
Reflection about the training
The trainer spent a lot of time on the basic uses of LMS which was useful for most teachers. It would be even more useful if there was more time spent on podcasting especially on 'Oral companion' since that would be one of our focus.
The use of the LMS portal is user friendly and easy to understand. It is engaging and students can learn at anywhere, anytime as long as they have a computer and a network. The only concern our department has is how do we incorporate the use of LMS into the lessons without losing curriculum time especially if students are not equipped with certain skills that are the pre-requisite of our focus? Perhaps the probable solution would be to incorporate the skills necessary into the ICT lessons of the students.
To move the use of LMS portal to a whole school approach may take a few years but nonetheless, there is a need to do so as we need to keep up with the students' needs for the new century.

Thanks Yin Mei for sharing the video on podcasting, which I think helps to better understand its application. Please invite others, especially those outside your department to watch this video.
ReplyDeleteYour reflection speaks of the need to spend more time on "Oral companion" in podcast. Please check with your head if the department will like to have another session solely on this feature.
